The author of the book “Battle of Brothers” Robert Lacey has revealed today in an interview that the real reason for Meghan and Harry to step down as senior royals was that they were “edged out” by the royal family. In the interview with Good morning America (GMA) Lacey told viewers that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – as Harry and Meghan are styled – reached rock star status after their marriage in 2018 and that they overshadowed William and Kate in their popularity. According to Lacey this didn’t sit well with the Palace and William in particular, which is why the Sussexes slowly found themselves outside the inner circle of the crown.

Meghan – a “megawatt” woman

Lacey described Meghan as a “megawatt” woman who was a self-made millionaire when she met Prince Harry. Meghan Markle played the role of a young and aspiring paralegal in the cable series “Suits”. Much like her character in the series, Meghan is vigorous by nature and not shy and demure like her sister-in-law Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Soon after Meghan married into the royal family, rumors were leaked to the press that she allegedly “terrorized” palace aides with e-mails or invoices as early as 5am. The aim was clearly to vilify Meghan, but there were also voices that applauded her work ethic. Soon it became clear that Meghan would play by the royal book, but that she would also opt in new ideas, much like Princess Diana and Prince Phillip before her. Problem was, according to Lacey, that the Palace – again – was not able to handle someone from outside who married into the royal family. Meghan was simply too much for the palace to deal with!

Harry is not the court jester anymore

The roles seemed to be clear between the brothers: William, the future king, was the serious one while Harry, the spare, was the court jester, the fun and wild child of the family – until he met Meghan! Meghan changed Harry in a positive way, giving him self confidence and a purpose in life other than just being the third wheel next to Willam and Kate. After Harry met Meghan, Harry obviously changed and became more serious. Meghan managed to widen Harry’s horizon showing him other possibilities to reach out more to help different causes and people. Harry had long ago set up his successful Invictus Games for handicapped army veterans worldwide. While he is still at this, Meghan and he diversified their support and help. Tomorrow, for example, they will be hosting the TIME100 special edition talks and step in line with notable people like UN secretary general António Guterres or speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. The palace is puzzled by this as they had hoped that Meghan and Harry would lead a low-key life overseas. They are still struggling what to make of Meghan and Harry’s frighteningly powerful agenda. Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan don’t seem to look back but continue to thrive on their new life and freedom in the US.

Kate’s jealousy

Lacey has brought another key factor to the table of why the Sussexes have left GB for the United States for good. Allegedly, Kate was jealous of her new sister-in-law on many levels. Meghan is equally beautiful like Kate and has a very good sense of style. Kate ultimately had to share the spotlight with another very attractive duchess, Lacey says. On top of that that, Meghan was outgoing and able to meet the royal challenges and demands very quickly. Also, Meghan’s energy is what has put Kate under a lot of pressure. Before Harry’s and Meghan’s marriage, William and Kate were heftily criticized for not taking over more representatives duties. They were called “Cannot and Willnot” in the press for not doing enough. Especially Kate was dubbed lazy and work-shy. Critics acknowledge that she has three young children, but they also point out that she has a lot of help like nannies and staff as well. Kate cannot have failed but noticed the fact that Meghan conducted her official appointments brilliantly. Even when she was pregnant with her first child, Meghan didn’t scale down the number of her appointments. She even went on a royal tour abroad to Morocco when she was pregnant, unfortunately not getting enough praise for that. When Kate was pregnant with George she was hardly seen in public because – as the palace let it be known – she suffered from “hypermesias gravidum”, which causes severe nausea and vomiting. Some of her critics accused Kate of faking it in order to avoid work. Of course that is a very bold accusation, but fact is that Meghan is capable and willing to stem a very heavy workload.

Bottomline is that Robert Lacey might have a point. William and Kate’s feathers were severely ruffled by the new power couple. And even with an ocean between these two couples, the tension between both of them is still palpable. William and Kate are certainly watching every step of the Sussexes very closely. And we already see a positive change: William and Kate have increased their workload.
