Princes William and Harry issue a rare joint statement

Date

Today the princely brothers William (38) and Harry (35) announced that they commissioned a statue to commemorate what would have been their mothers 60th birthday next year. The statue shall be revealed on July 1, 2021 in the Sunken Gardens of Kensington Palace. Princess Diana died in a car accident on August 31, 1997 in Paris.

The announcement is noteworthy as it is the first joint statement after the dramatic fallout between the two brothers at the beginning of the year. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan (39) decided to quit royal duties to pursue a more private life. They now live in Santa Barbara together with their son Archie (1) while Willam and his wife Catherine (38) continue with their royal tasks in Britain. Prince Harry has revealed in an interview last year that he and his brothers are on different paths. Yet, he also added that they would get back together since they are brothers after all. So, this announcement today might be well be the first step towards reconciliation.

Kensington Palace – a home

Kensington Palace is certainly the right place to install the new statue as it had been Princess Diana’s home. Here she raised her two sons and continued to live there after her divorce from Prince Charles (71). When she moved into the Palace, that consists of many apartments, she and Charles lived in the apartments 8 and 9. Many of the childhood pictures of William and Harry were taken within the rooms of these two apartments.

Today, William and Catherine live in apartment 1A together with their children Prince George (7), Princess Charlotte (5) and Prince Louis (2). It is the biggest apartment and was vastly renovated to host the young family. The Cambridges used to live at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, but moved to London in 2018 to conduct more royal duties. Of course, they keep Anmer Hall as their country home and continue to retreat there whenever they can. They have spent most of the time during the Corona pandemic at Anmer Hall to self-isolate.
